K-9's on a Mission
Some new additions are already making a big impact. Seven new K-9 units, all recently certified, were busy combing the halls of Cabell Midland High School for drugs on Thursday.
From the Parking lot to the halls, a surprise drug search right before prom is a good idea says David Tackett Cabell Midland High School’s principal.
The search is a joint effort with the local sheriff's department and the city's of Milton and Huntington.
“The dogs can hit on residual odor,” Doug Adams, of the Cabell County Sheriff’s Department said. “They can hit on anything that at one time had been used to hit on any narcotic."
Just a few miles away from the school, several dozen k-9 units from across the country are in training, putting local, certified, dogs into action.
“It gives the advantage for officers on smaller departments that have k-9's to let them discover the endurance levels of their dogs," Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas said.
Students in Cabell County are now subject to random drug testing with parental permission, an attempt for kids to stay clean.

Another effort to heighten awareness, k-9’s sniffing the hallways could happen at anytime during the school year.
"We didn't really discover anything of substance here,” Tackett said. “With 7 hounds on campus, we've emptied several classrooms and checked nearly every single locker which is a good sign for the school."
Nothing found, at least this time around.
